We arrived in Johannesburg at 5:30 p.m. today after a 16 hour flight. Brief stop in Dakar, Senegal to refuel. The most exciting part of the journey was the drive to Dulles Airport with my family. We got into an accident on the Beltway! Luckily, everyone was ok. I made the flight on time (thanks to a Amanda, GETEP team leader, who picked me and my luggage up on the shoulder of the Beltway). Our ride to Sandton (yes, I just sent you to Wikipedia) from O.R. Tambo International Airport was a bit disorienting with the steering wheels and traffic flow different from the U.S. We passed several accidents, but our driver (You know his name. It's Obvious. No, really, that's his name) got us to the beautiful DaVinci Hotel safely.
An exciting day at the World Affairs Council, DC. Met with the organization's staff and the other participating teachers in the Global Exchange Teacher Education Program (GETEP). The highlight was our visit to the South African Embassy, where we met with H.E. Mninwa J. Mahlangu (Ambassador) and Deputy Chief of Mission, Nowetu Luti. We had our picture taken in front of a striking statue of Nelson Mandela. In a few days we'll be standing in front of another statue of Mandela, this one in Nelson Mandela Square, Johannesburg.
